Padworth Preparation Progamme

Our Padworth Preparation Programme prepares EFL learners for greater success in their further studies. The Programme consists of intensive English language tuition and study skills support for international students who need to improve their English before enrolling on our GCSE, A Level and NCUK International Foundation Year courses.

Developed in conjunction with Bishopstrow College, this programme will prepare our EFL learners to deal with the linguistic and cognitive demands of further study. The programme provides a bespoke approach to the integration of subject language and syllabus, including individual learning plans for each student.

Dependent on their level of English language and academic ability, the Padworth Preparation Programme can be taught for one, two or three terms, before moving onto their further studies.

The Padworth Preparation Programme will be assessed through regular language assessments and tracking, resulting in a certificate of completion.

The Padworth Preparation Programme consists of two levels to cater for lower and higher levels of language ability. Across both levels, all subjects are taught using the Cambridge English course books and resources. English language support is scaffolded into the syllabus of each subject as well as being taught in separate groups, with the lower level group receiving higher levels of English language support and lower levels of syllabus content.  In the higher level group, English language support scaffolding is reduced and syllabus content is increased.

English as a Foreign language is integrated with core subject lessons across both levels:

Padworth Preparation Programme students learn English through engaging with subject content. This approach not only improves their general English proficiency but also introduces them to the academic language and exam-style tasks they are likely to encounter in future studies.

EFL Business

Padworth Preparation Programme students enhance their English skills by studying Business topics, which provide a practical context for language use. Incorporating Cambridge English Business materials, the course helps students improve their general English while preparing them for the academic and professional language they will need in future studies. Through case studies, business scenarios, and real-world applications, students build key skills in communication, critical thinking, and data interpretation. This approach ensures they are not only confident in handling business-related terminology but also well-prepared for exam-style tasks and questions they are likely to face in academic and professional environments.

EFL Geography

In this course, Padworth Preparation Programme students advance their English by engaging with Geography, a subject that offers a rich context for language development. As they explore topics such as human and physical landscapes, students naturally improve their general English while acquiring the academic terminology and question types they will encounter in future assessments. The focus on interpreting maps, analyzing data, and discussing environmental issues equips students with essential skills in reading, writing, and presenting information, helping them gain confidence in handling both language exams and subject-specific academic tasks.

EFL History

By exploring historical topics, students develop key skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and structured writing, which align with the demands of academic assessments. The integration of History content ensures that students are familiar with subject-specific vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and question formats, preparing them for both English language exams and further academic success.

EFL Maths

Padworth Preparation Programme students develop their English skills by working through Maths content, where understanding the language of problem-solving is as crucial as mastering the numbers. Since EFL students often find the wording of UK Maths questions challenging, this course focuses on helping them navigate the specific language used in mathematical problems. By tackling real exam-style questions, students improve their ability to interpret and respond to complex instructions, ensuring they not only gain confidence in Maths but also enhance their general English skills. This integrated approach prepares them for the language demands of both Maths exams and broader academic challenges.

EFL Science

Padworth Preparation Programme students strengthen their English by engaging with Maths, Physics, and Chemistry content, using resources specifically designed for a content and language integrated approach. This ensures that while they study scientific concepts, they also develop the language skills needed to understand and respond to complex questions in these subjects. The focus is on improving both general English and the specialised vocabulary and structures used in scientific problem-solving. By working with exam-style tasks, students are better prepared for the language and cognitive demands of future studies, gaining confidence in tackling academic challenges in both Science and English.
