A LEVEL

YEAR 12-13 // AGE 16–18

Our Year 12 and 13 students follow a two-year A Level course. A Level (Advanced Level) is a subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education – as well as a school leaving qualification offered by educational institutions in the United Kingdom. A Level courses offer students the opportunity to specialise in the subjects they enjoy and in which they have done well at (I)GCSE level or equivalent. A Levels remain the most popular route into universities in the United Kingdom. Our University and Careers Adviser works closely with all A Level students to ensure they receive guidance and support for the universities application process through UCAS. and guide them to make the right subject choices in accordance with their careers aspirations as well as to help them with every step of the universities application process through UCAS.

Our students choose three A Level subjects for two years. In addition, international students require IELTS in addition as this is a university entrance requirement for non-native speakers.
In exceptional circumstances it is possible to study four A Level subjects but this will need prior discussion with the Deputy Principal. During the course of the first year, depending on performance and after careful discussion, it may be appropriate for a student to drop one of the four subjects and carry the remaining three through to A Level.

A Levels are based on four to six units of approximately equal size depending on the subject. English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, History, Sociology, Psychology, Business Studies, Economics and Art are linear two year courses, with all examinations taking place at the end of Year 13, grades A*–G (pass) and U (fail). All other subjects are made up of AS Levels and A2 Levels, which means AS exams in Year 12 and A2 exams in Year 13. AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level exams take place in Year 12 and are worth half an A Level in terms of UCAS points for university entrance. At the end of the two years of study, students will receive the full A Level (AS and A2 combined).
