THE IDEA, SIMPLY
The rule, with an example
Past continuous sets an activity in progress. Past simple introduces completed events. Past perfect refers to an earlier event. Choose the form by the relationship between events, not by isolated signal words.
SEE IT IN CONTEXTI was reading when the lights went out. I had forgotten to charge my torch.

I was reading when the phone rang.. Was reading sets the background; rang gives the shorter completed event.
Try these two tasks before opening the answers. They practise explanation and writing; they do not change your quiz score.
1. Explain or repair
Put these events in order: I noticed that I had lost my wallet while I was waiting for the train.
Check the reasoning
Losing the wallet happened before noticing. Waiting was the background activity during which I noticed. The sentence does not say exactly when the loss happened.
2. Make the meaning
Write two sentences about an interruption and an earlier reason for a problem.
Compare a possible answer
I was writing when the screen went blank. I had forgotten to charge the laptop. Was writing is background; went advances the story; had forgotten gives an earlier cause.
Other wording may be correct. Compare the meaning and verb pattern, not just the words.
Open the question that matches where you got stuck.
Which tenses do I need to tell a story?
Use past simple for main events, past continuous for an activity in progress and past perfect to look further back. Example: “I was walking home when I noticed I had lost my key.” The walking is background; noticing moves the story; losing happened earlier.
Do I need to use every narrative tense in one paragraph?
No. Choose only the time relationships your story needs. A straightforward sequence can work entirely in past simple. Adding a perfect or continuous form should clarify meaning, not decorate the paragraph.
