THE IDEA, SIMPLY

The rule, with an example

Although introduces a contrasting clause. Because gives a reason. Therefore introduces a result. Despite is followed by a noun phrase or an -ing form, not an ordinary full clause.

SEE IT IN CONTEXTAlthough the first attempt failed, we learned something useful. We therefore tried again.
Skills to work on in this practice
  • Show contrast, reason and result
  • Choose a connector that fits the logic
  • Build clear links between sentences

Choose the relationship before the connector

UseExampleWhy it works
ContrastAlthough it was noisy, I finished.Although introduces a clause with a subject and verb.
ReasonI moved because the room was noisy.Because introduces the reason for moving.
Contrast with a nounDespite the noise, I finished.Despite takes a noun phrase here.

Common mistake

Check: Despite it was noisy

Use: Although it was noisy

Use although with a full clause, or rewrite as despite the noise.

How should I practise this?

BEYOND MULTIPLE CHOICE

Can you use it yourself?

Try these two tasks before opening the answers. They practise explanation and writing; they do not change your quiz score.

1. Explain or repair

Repair: Although I was tired, but I finished.

Check the reasoning

Although I was tired, I finished. Although already marks the contrast; do not also use but to join these clauses.

2. Make the meaning

Express this contrast using despite: The room was noisy. I could concentrate.

Compare a possible answer

Despite the noise, I could concentrate. Noise is a noun phrase; despite does not directly introduce the clause the room was noisy.

Other wording may be correct. Compare the meaning and verb pattern, not just the words.
