“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is.” Vince Lombardi
Goal setting is the theme this week, encapsulated perfectly in this short quotation. Vince Lombardi was an American NFL player and then coach, who still boasts the second-best win percentage as a coach, despite the fact that he died almost 50 years ago.
I like this quotation and think that it is both very true and very important. Why start something and not want to win? Not want to be the best? Not want to give absolutely everything? I guess at certain times we all have to just go through the motions of certain things, be they meetings, practices, training etc…but when it is our choice, wanting to win should be that motivation.
I was talking to somebody recently about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for students. At A Level (if potentially not beforehand) the motivation to succeed and get the best possible grade must be intrinsic. That is to say the students must want it for themselves and not because their parents do, or society does or whatever. The goal of getting to the best possible university should be motivation enough to set those sights as high as possible and that is the intrinsic motivation, that want to win.
Of course, psychology plays a large part in the wanting to win, so do repeated and learnt behaviours and having had a taste of it. In 2018 Vincent Kompany was interviewed after winning the premier league. He said that it is the best feeling in the world. When he first won it in 2012, he thought that the feeling would last forever and it would be easy to repeat, but when he didn’t then win it the following year, he said it was the worst feeling in the world and didn’t know if he would ever win it again. He wanted to win and still does despite the fact that he has now won it four times including both of the last two.
So. Be realistic. Set those goals high. Be disappointed if you don’t reach them, if you don’t win, but don’t be too hard on yourself. In the grand scheme of things, it won’t really matter. What matters is that you want to win in the first place.
