Art students enjoy the sights of Barcelona
A group of 28 GCSE and A Level students from Padworth enjoyed a sunny weekend in the lively Spanish art capital of Barcelona to experience the culture and to tour some of the renowned art galleries and museums as well the famous Gaudi architecture.
Many of the students are studying Photography, Fine Art, Textiles and Graphics and the trip enabled them to undertake research for their project-based work and to familiarise themselves with famous artworks. Of particular interest to the Graphics students was the Museu del Perfum where they were able to learn about the history of perfume packaging and to explore the way that brand designs have evolved – once back in the art studio, they will be using this research to develop their own packaging designs as part of their examined coursework.
Highlights of the trip were the Picasso Museum where they focused on the portrait collection and discovering the extraordinary architecture of Gaudi. The group also managed to fit in some sightseeing and shopping as well as enjoying the street entertainment on Las Ramblas.
Marianna Ziffo, Head of the Art Department said, “Barcelona is a fabulous place to take art students and they all really enjoyed this trip – the experience of being able to see famous pieces of original artwork for themselves is invaluable and provides excellent support for their art and design studies.”

Padworth students inspired by field trip to coastal Pembrokeshire
A group of 11 Padworth AS level biology and geography students and their teachers have just returned from the Dale Fort Field Study Centre where they spent a week at the internationally renowned
coastal ecology centre based in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
The students made the most of the superb opportunities offered by the Centre to investigate marine biology in a variety of coastal habitats and to study coastal processes, geological formations and ecosystems. Each day was spent outdoors in practical tasks such as surveying the shoreline, identifying and recording marine life followed up with analysis and project work back at the Centre in the evenings, supported by both their teachers and the scientific staff based at Dale Fort. Amongst other excursions, the students took part in a plankton sampling trip where they ventured out into the open sea in a speedboat to collect plankton in nets to view under state-of-the-art microscopes linked to projectors and to discuss plankton’s role in the marine ecosystem. Much of the work undertaken fulfils the fieldwork requirements of the A Level syllabus and will form the basis of the students’ coursework in the months to come.
Geography teacher, Dr. Alex Mitlehner said, “Field trips like this really bring a subject to life and give ecology students unrivalled access to a full range of specialized field equipment, expert tutors and well-equipped laboratories. Our students have really enjoyed all of the activities but the highlight of the week for many of them was the boat trip to Skomer Island which gave us a fascinating insight into the ecology and conservation management of this unique location and the chance to see many different species of seabirds, seals and porpoises.”
Easter at Padworth
The annual Easter School at Padworth welcomed 40 students from 9 different countries to the popular Language and Activities course which ran for three weeks. The specialist team of ESOL staff taught the students in small groups sorted by ability ensuring that every student received the individual attention that they needed to improve both their written and spoken English during their holiday. Of course, the advantage of residential language holidays is that the students are immersed in English throughout the waking day both inside and outside of the classroom.
In the afternoons, the students took part in a full programme of sporting and recreational activities based on and off the Padworth campus. Particularly popular were the tennis tournaments and many of the students participated in horse riding.
Twice a week, the students went out on full day trips, some of which have an educational focus whilst others were purely for fun. Excursions during the Easter School included a very enjoyable day’s shopping in Covent Garden, a fascinating visit to the London Aquarium and a trip to Monkey World, a Chimpanzee rescue centre where the students were entranced by the antics of the apes!
Whilst Easter School runs only for three weeks, five students, whose school holidays did not coincide with the Easter School dates, have stayed on at Padworth. They have transferred to the All Year Language and Activities course which is similar in content to Easter School but which is available throughout the academic year for groups and individuals. This is ideal for students who wish to extend their stay in England.
Easter School Director, Arthur Shields said “As always, the youngsters have had a great time – it is always a pleasure to see the way that their increased confidence in speaking English enables the students to broaden their horizons and make new friendships during their time at Padworth. The highlight of this year’s Easter School was the outing to the Wylde Court Rainforest, an indoor oasis of tropical plants and animals which the students absolutely loved.”
Padworth welcomes ex-Newlands students
Padworth is pleased to have been able to provide places for 13 ex-Newlands students who were faced with having to find a new school following the sudden and unexpected closure of Newlands School near Seaford, East Sussex at the end of the Spring Term.
Many of the students are taking their GCSEs and A Levels this summer and so it was vital that they find a new school immediately in order to transfer to a new examination centre and to minimise the disruption to their studies at such a vital time.
Principal, Robert Swan said, “We are delighted to assist these young people at such a difficult time and in the coming weeks will help them to re-gain their focus on their studies prior to their examinations. Our teaching staff are very experienced in accommodating students at any point in the academic year and will support these students in very small classes giving individual attention so that each student achieves their academic goals in spite of the setback that they have experienced in their school life.”

Sixth form students from Padworth College attend the "Your future in Europe" Conference in Paris
Twenty students from the sixth form at Padworth College set off for Paris last weekend to visit some of the most well-endowed art galleries in the world and to attend the prestigious “Your Future in Europe” E ducational Conference, a one-day seminar featuring an impressive array of political and business speakers.
The aims of the trip were twofold: to enable the A Level Art students to experience for themselves the famous paintings in the art centre of Europe and to give students who are studying for A Level Economics and related subjects the opportunity to attend lectures by leaders in business and commerce and eminent politicians including Dennis MacShane, former Minister for Europe.
The Conference is designed to inform A level students on European issues and provide information and inspirational experiences on working and studying in Europe. The students were involved in a lively 'Question Time' style panel session with current Members of Parliament.
Alison Eves, Economics teacher, said, “This Conference gave our students a unique opportunity to hear about real live issues straight from some of the opinion leaders in the European arena. The students were particularly inspired by a session on the “Make Poverty History” campaign and how the European Union is providing direct aid and helping to reduce world poverty. The conference provides an ideal way to link learning in the classroom to real world practice and to help the students to question and think critically about current affairs.”
The Art students, armed with sketchbooks and cameras, spent three days following a busy itinerary which included museums, galleries and the sights of Paris. Although the focus was primarily on modern art at the Picasso Museum and the Georges Pompidou Centre, the students also visited the more traditional art collections in the Louvre. They also managed to fit in a river trip along the Seine and visits to the cathedrals of Sacre Coeur and Notre Dame, as well as some shopping trips and sampling French cuisine.
Marianna Ziffo, Head of the Art Department at Padworth College said “Everyone has really enjoyed this trip; the experience of seeing well-known original artwork is invaluable to all art students and supports the historical and contextual aspects of the project work undertaken as part of their A level course.”

Padworth College supports local group
Padworth Ladies’ Group are celebrating 25 years of fundraising at Padworth College after it was announced that the group had raised a grand total of over £25,000
during that time.
Each year, the Ladies’ Group has organised an annual Christmas Dinner followed by carol singing led by the Hurst Choir in the College Dining Hall inviting about 100 villagers from Padworth and the surrounding area for a festive evening to raise funds for local charities. This year, a total of £1,600 was donated to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and the Duchess of Kent Hospice.
The first Dinner took place in 1979 when the Ladies’ Group wanted to raise money for a new Church floor and the incumbent College Principal, Guy Wilson offered the use of the 18th Century Padworth House to support such a worthy intention. After that, it became an annual date in the Padworth community’s diary and over the years, the Ladies’ Group have raised money for many different local good causes. Barbara Rose who was Chairwoman of the Group for over 20 years and former House Mistress at the College, said “We are delighted to have raised this grand total of £25,000 for local charity and would like to thank Padworth College for their generous help and support over the years.”

Padworth students in regional heats of Bank of England Target 2.0
Padworth College took part in the Regional Heats of the Bank of England/Times Interest Rate Challenge at the Great House at Sonning on Thursday 30th November 2005.

Russian students improve their English at Padworth College
Two Russian students have just completed a two week language holiday course at Padworth College taking advantage of the new All Year Language and Activities courses operating at the College throughout the school year. The girls were able to make the most of their school holiday even though it did not coincide with the normal UK school holidays when most language courses are on offer.
The students had a packed timetable fitting in 21 hours of English tuition both alongside the Full-time ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students and receiving individual tuition from Padworth's fully qualified and experienced ESOL teachers. The main aim of the teachers is to ensure that students enjoy learning English through using a variety of teaching techniques to provide students with a stimulating and vibrant learning experience. Both students were presented with a certificate of achievement at the end of their course having made excellent improvements in their spoken and written English.
The Head of the ESOL Department, Belinda Sumner said "We've all had great fun and it has been very satisfying to see the way that these two students have grown in confidence with their spoken English during their stay here"
The students enjoyed a number of excursions to places of historic and cultural interest Including Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre where the students learned about the essential work being undertaken to combat illegal smuggling of primates and the international captive breeding programme for endangered species as well as enjoying the antics of the chimpanzees at feeding time!
The beautiful cathedral city of Winchester, the historic royal palace of Hampton Court and a sightseeing trip to London were also on the itinerary. These trips then form the basis for the students to undertake project work back in the classroom which was displayed in the ESOL department.
One of the students wrote in her course feedback, "In these two weeks, I learnt a lot of new interesting information. Now I can speak English. Not good, but I can understand conversations. This two weeks, Padworth was my second home.I want to return to Padworth"

Showcase of Padworth Talents
A multitude of talents emerged from this year's student community at Padworth College last weekend when the Annual Talent Night took place. The Talent Night takes place early on in the academic year to give newcomers an opportunity to display their talents and to get to know other students in the College.
Ably compered by one of the students who kept the whole show moving along, the audience was treated to a tremendous programme of acts ranging from a bouncy rendition of "99 Red Balloons" in German through to classical piano recitals by a number of talented individuals and the Padworth Dance Club's highly entertaining version of the Cha Cha.
Louisa performed an energetic solo presentation of a traditional Chinese dance making full use of every available inch of the stage and delighting the audience with her elegant leaps and turns.
Whilst the lively audience gave warm and enthusiastic support for all of the acts, the applause for Aisha's spine tingling rendition of Celine Dion's Theme from Titanic nearly raised the roof of Padworth House! And then silence reigned as the crowd watched the spell-binding performance of the traditional Indian belly dancing troupe who performed with grace and beauty.
The final memorable piece was "A scene from The Sound of Music" with a group of girls singing "So Long, Farewell" which made a poignant and perfect ending to a very lively and entertaining evening.
Principal, Robert Swan said "Talent Nights are always popular with the students and I was very impressed by the high standard of the acts - there was a great atmosphere and all the students enjoyed the evening."

Padworth is fully co-educational
Padworth College welcomed the first cohort of eight boys aged between 14 and 18 through the school's doors this week marking a significant milestone in the 40-year history of the school which provides affordable private education for 13-18 year old students and regularly achieves outstanding academic results.
Padworth made the decision to accept boys from September 2005 as a result of an increasing demand from parents both in the UK and the rest of the world, and in line with the belief that co-education brings a host of both academic and social benefits to the students.
The Principal, Robert Swan, welcomed the new students saying, "I am delighted to see the first boys begin their school life at Padworth taking us into the next phase of our planned development into a fully co-educational school. I believe that whilst they will be taking advantage of our uniquely informal academic atmosphere and very small classes, the School as a whole will benefit hugely from their valued contribution to school life".
The group of boys come from a mix of backgrounds both from the UK and overseas and Padworth is expecting 15 in all before the end of the academic year. The boys will be housed in separate accommodation to the girls but will join the 70 girls who participate in a wide and flexible range of academic programmes tailored to meet their individual needs as well as the opportunity to benefit from the varied extra-curricular activities on offer.
